There are plenty of collectibles around that
could grow in value such as baseball cards, stamps and currency.
You may have coins worth money laying around your homeI’m always
fascinated by the value of rare coins, which can be worth so much
more than the physical currency itself. I’m really curious to find
out how much these coins can be worth, so I’m doing some research.
From what I’ve heard, these coins can be incredibly valuable,
depending on their condition, the rarity, and the date of the coin.
Some of these coins have been known to be worth tens of thousands
of dollars, so it’s no wonder they are so sought after. I’m excited
to learn more about these rare coins and their worth.

World’s Most Valuable Coins

I recently took a look at some of the most
valuable coins out there and their prices. The 1913 Liberty Head
Nickel, for example, was sold for over $4 million! The 1804 Silver
Dollar is also extremely valuable and was sold for $3.7 million.
The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar sold for $10 million, and the
1787 Brasher Doubloon went for $7.4 million. Even the most common
valuable coins are worth a lot, like the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double
Eagle, which sold for $7.6 million. It’s incredible just how much
these coins are worth!

1. The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

value: $18.9 million in 2021

I’m the proud owner of the most valuable coin in
the world – the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Although it’s not the
rarest, the coins were minted from 1907 to 1933, but many exchanged
it for paper money back then. If you’re lucky, you can find a
Double Eagle but the 1933 is the most valuable one, since it was
sold for $18.9 million in 2021! That’s why I’m so proud of my
coin.

2. The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar

value: $10 million in 2013

The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar was the first
official silver-dollar coin minted in the U.S.I had no idea that
coins could be so valuable. But, I recently learned that a 1794
release was sold for over ten million dollars in 2013! This had
been collected by a Las Vegas collector. And, although 2000 coins
were produced in 1794, only 130 of them are still around. Who
knows, I might be lucky enough to find one someday!

3. The 1787 Brasher Doubloon

value: $9.36 million in 2021

I was the first to mint a silver dollar in the
US – the Flowing Hair Silver Dollar – but it was the 1787 Brasher
Doubloon that was the first gold version. Ephraim Brasher, neighbor
of George Washington’s, made only seven of them. One of them sold
for a whopping $9.36 million because it was the only one with
Brasher’s initials on the eagle’s wing. That’s why it’s so
valuable!

4. The 1343 Edward III Florin

value: £460,000 in 2006, estimated to be worth $6.8
million today

I’m the 1343 Edward III Florin, otherwise known
as the Double Leopard. I’m a medieval coin created in 1343 and
1344, and I’m one of only two coins that still exist today. The
third one was discovered in England in 1857 by someone with a metal
detector. In 2006, I was auctioned off for an impressive £460,000,
but now I’m estimated to be worth a whopping $6.8 million. Talk
about a big pay-off!

5. The 723 Umayyad Gold Dinar

value: $4.8 million in 2019

I’m one of the few lucky people to have ever
laid eyes on the Umayyad gold dinar. It’s the oldest and most
valuable coin out there, dating all the way back to 723 AD – with
only 12 remaining. Scholars say the inscription on it translates to
“Mine of the Commander of the Faithful in the Hijaz”. Last year, it
sold for an incredible £3.72 million – or around $4.8 million!

6. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

value: $4.4 million in 2010

This dramatic, oversized coin weighs 220 pounds
and holds the Guinness Book of World RecordsI’m amazed by the
world’s largest gold coin, with only six created. I remember when
one was sold for €3.7 million back in 2010. Even though it was huge
and heavy, somebody still managed to steal one from Berlin’s Bode
Museum in 2017. That’s incredible!

7. Liberty Head V Nickel

value: $4.2 million in 2022

I’m a coin collector, so I’m well aware of the
Liberty Head V Nickel. It’s not something you’ll find in the U.S.
Mint’s records, but it’s out there. Five of them, to be exact. It
was replaced by the Indian Head Nickel, but the Liberty Head V is
still highly sought after by collectors even today. Two of them are
in museum collections at the Smithsonian and ANA Money Museum. In
2022, one of the coins sold for a whopping $4.2 million! That’s why
I’m always on the lookout for Liberty Head V Nickels.

8. The 1894-S Barber Dime

value: $1.99 million in 2016

I’m one of the few lucky ones that could be in
possession of the rare 1894-S Barber Dime. Only 24 were ever
minted, and so far nine have been found. That means there could
still be 15 out there waiting to be discovered! If I’m looking for
a little extra motivation to scour through my change or invest in a
metal detector, I should know that one of the rare dimes sold for
an incredible $1.99 million in 2016. Who knows what my dime could
be worth!

9. The 1943 Lincoln Head Copper Penny

value: $1.75 million in 2010

Pennies were always minted with copper. But
during World War II, copper and nickel were needed for other
purposes and the U.S. Mint produced 1943 pennies with steel.
Although the run was nothing special, a batch was accidentally
created using copperI’m the proud owner of the highest-sold penny
ever! In 2010, my 1943-D penny was graded PCGS MS64 Brown and sold
for a cool $1.75 million. I’m still in shock that a penny could be
worth so much, but it’s a reminder that even the smallest coins can
have big value.

10. The 1893 Morgan Silver Dollar

value: $550,000

I just found out that the second silver dollar
is one of the coins that is actually worth real money! The minting
of these coins started in 1878 and ended in 1904, with an
additional run in 1921. The 1893 editions are apparently the most
valuable, which is probably because only 100,000 were made. I’m
amazed that despite the large run, one of these coins can still be
worth up to $550,000! That’s pretty wild.

11. The Sacagawea Cheerios Dollar

value: $25,000

I was shocked when I heard about the Cheerios
coin promotion from 2000. In partnership with the U.S. Mint,
Cheerios distributed a special coin inside 5,500 boxes of cereal.
But only a hundred of these coins had an enhanced tail-feather
design, and they’re incredibly valuable – collectors are willing to
pay up to $25,000 for them! It’s crazy to think that something so
small and seemingly insignificant can be worth so much!

Takeaway

Certain coins are worth considerably more than
their face value or the value they’d fetch for their goldI’ve
noticed that many of the coins on this list that are worth money
have higher gold or silver content. Most of these coins were
released in large numbers and could still be around today. It pays
to pay attention to the metal content of coins, since that’s
usually a good indicator of their value.

Keep an eye out for a treasure — or start your
own coin collection with less-expensive but still valuable
coins.
