The Cheerio Dollar

In 1999, I was excited to hear that the US
mint was issuing the new Sacagawea Dollar in the year 2000. To
promote it, they decided to put 5,500 of these coins and 10 million
Lincoln Memorial Pennies in Cheerios cereal boxes! I thought it was
a great idea and knew the coins would be a great addition to my
collection.

I recently heard about a Sacagawea dollar with
extra detail in the tail feathers of the eagle on the reverse side.
It was estimated that only 5,500 of these coins had been made, but
that number was thrown into question when PCGS opened a sealed
Cheerios box and found a Sacagawea dollar inside. To my surprise,
it was a standard coin without the extra detail, so it seems there
are even fewer of these special coins than we initially
thought.

I recently stumbled upon a Cheerio Dollar,
which is a special kind of coin identifiable by the extra detail in
the tail feathers! It’s worth up to $2,700 and even more in Mint
State condition. It’s definitely something I’m keen to add to my
collection!

The 22 Karat Gold W
Proof

I was involved in the Mint’s promotion of the
Cheerio Dollars, where we also minted 39 West Point Mint 22 Karat
gold proof coins. These coins were struck on the same planchet as
the $25 Golden Eagle coins. We were originally going to mint and
sell more of these coins to the public, but we decided against it.
All but twelve of the best-looking coins were destroyed, and the
remaining ones were sent up into space on the Space Shuttle
Columbia.

I recently had the chance to personally escort
a shipment of coins from outer space. After a successful mission, I
made sure to bring them back to earth and securely deliver them to
Fort Knox in Kentucky. In 2007, I was also given the honor of
taking the coins on the road and presenting them at the American
Numismatic Association’s World Fair of Money. It was an incredible
experience that I’ll never forget.

I was paid in the most special way when I
received the $5,000 for designing the obverse of the Sacagawea
Dollar – 2000 P Sacagawea Dollar coins. The two varieties of these
coins both had a pre-burnished planchet, but only the type 2 coins
were burnished after striking, giving them a less shiny finish.
Even without the extra burnishing, the type 1 coins still had a
specimen-like look.

Wounded Eagle
Dollar

I’m always on the lookout for errors on coins,
so I was thrilled when I spotted a wounded eagle dollar. It has a
raised line on the back of the coin that cuts through the eagle’s
belly. It’s one of those errors that can be worth up to $5,000 in
Mint State condition. It’s definitely something worth keeping an
eye out for when you’re looking for coins.
