DetailsI remember when Sacagawea Dollars were first
released in 2000! It was pretty cool to see a woman celebrated on
the face of a US currency. On the obverse side of the dollar, you
can see Sacagawea depicted with her infant son, Jean-Baptiste,
strapped to her back. Glenna Goodacre designed the obverse, and
Thomas D. Rogers designed the reverse side, which features an eagle
in flight. It’s a great reminder of the strength, courage and
resilience of this young Shoshone woman.
I’m the Sacagawea dollar, also known as the
‘golden dollar’. I’m not like other coins, I’m made of a unique
alloy of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel –
plus I’m round with a smooth edge! That’s why I’m so different from
the Susan B. Anthony dollar. They didn’t really take off, but I’m
here to stay. People recognize me and I’m widely circulated around
the world.
I had high expectations for the Sacagawea dollar
when it came out, but sadly it wasn’t as successful as I had hoped.
So in 2009, the Sacagawea dollar was replaced with the Native
American dollar. The obverse of the coin features Sacagawea, and
the reverse features various people, events, and symbols
significant to Native American peoples. Plus, the edge of the coin
has a lettering with the date, mintmark, and the motto E PLURIBUS
UNUM.
