Notes:

I’m a collector of Morgan Dollars and I’m always
on the lookout for 1921s. That’s because production of these coins
resumed in 1921 after a 17-year hiatus. The reason? The Pittman Act
of 1918, which required a large number of older Morgan and Peace
dollars to be melted down and recoined as 1921s. As a result, 1921
Silver Dollars often have nice, reeded edges, which you don’t find
on coins minted in the late 1800s. Collecting these coins is a real
thrill for me, and I’m always looking for the perfect one.

I remember in 1921, the US Mint was in a rush to
produce as many Morgan Silver Dollars as they could. Unfortunately,
their quality control wasn’t up to par and it resulted in a lot of
errors. I’m sure the mint workers were exhausted by the end of
it.

1921 Silver Dollar Errors Include;
Curved Clip Error-the lip or
edge of the coin will have a curved clip that dips into the coin.
Rim Defect Error-the rim of
these coins has many defects be sure to check them for errors.
Missing or Partial
Numbers
-there are several instances of portions of numbers
and or letters in words missing. The likely cause is the die was
filled with a foreign substance or die grease. Blank Planchet– a blank coin with nothing
on it at all. The blank or planchet somehow made it into
circulation. Lamination
Error
-a portion of the lamination or outer skin of the
coin may be missing. Last but not least Die Break Errors-when the die breaks or
cracks it leaves a mark on the coin.

More about a few of
these errors…

Blank Planchet

I’m a blank planchet Morgan Silver Dollar from
1921 and I’m a Type 2, which means I have a RIM. In order to become
currency, I had to go through a few steps. Before this, I was made
into a planchet – flat and without a rim – which is a Type I. Then
I was struck by dies and transformed into the coin you see before
you. That Rim is the only thing that’s been added since I was made
into a planchet.

Off Center Strikes

I’ve heard of off-center 1921 silver dollars and
it’s something that can happen when the die isn’t properly aligned
with the planchet. These errors can be worth thousands of dollars
when it comes to the 1921 Morgans. It’s not in the picture but it’s
definitely worth looking out for if you’re a collector.

Did you know?

I’m a coin collector and I was totally taken by
surprise when the US Mint released millions of Morgan Silver
Dollars between 1962 and 1964. The coins had been stored in bags
since 1929, and some of them were ultra rare. This caused the
prices of certain Morgans to drop drastically and shook up the
silver dollar market in the Numismatic community. It was definitely
an interesting time!

This section is more for experienced collectors onlyI’m new to coin
collecting, but I’m starting to get a handle on it. I’ve heard that
the prices for coins depend on whether they are professionally
graded and slabbed. That doesn’t mean much to me right now, but I’m
learning more every day. I guess the prices for these coins are
based on how much they are worth, but it’s also important to
consider their condition when looking at how much to pay. I’m
excited to get started on this hobby and find out more about these
coins and their value.

How much is a 1921 Silver Dollar worth?

This section is more of a layman’s guide, for
those new to collecting.

In Average Circulated (AC) condition it’s worth
around $32.00, one in
certified mint state (MS+) condition could bring as much as
$280 at auction. This price
does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say
Average Circulated, we mean in a similar condition to other coins
circulated in 1921, and mint state meaning it is certified MS+ by
one of the top coin grading companies. *** [?].

Front
(Obverse):
I’m looking at Lady Liberty, facing left. The
words “E Pluribus Unum” are inscribed beneath her, which means “Out
of Many, One”. It’s a reminder of how the United States was formed
by the union of many states. Right in the center of the coin is the
date, and surrounding it are 13 stars – each one representing one
of the initial 13 colonies.

Back
(Reverse):
I gaze upon the majestic bald eagle, its talons
clutching both arrows and an olive branch. Symbolic of the United
States’ capability for peace and war. Its wingspan is wide, its
gaze cast to the left. And inscribed on the reverse are the words
“In God We Trust”, “United States of America”, and “One Dollar”. A
powerful statement of our nation’s strength and unity.

Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value:

[add_toplist_link post=4]

I’m not sure if I should be a silver bug or a
collector. This coin in poor condition is valued at $13.71 more
than the silver content worth of $18.29. So it looks like it’s more
beneficial for me to be a collector rather than a silver bug. Even
if metal prices drop, the coin will still have value to a
numismatic. That means that this coin could be a better long-term
investment for me.

I’m no expert on coins, but I’m aware that the
prices of coins are subject to supply and demand, dealer premiums,
and other market fluctuations. From what I’ve seen, the prices of
coins are determined by what’s been fetched at online auctions,
estate sales, and from certified coin dealers. It’s important to
note that the overall value of a coin is more than just its
appearance, metal content, and rarity. If you need a more detailed
assessment, I’d recommend reaching out to a local coin dealer.
