Background

I was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio in 1831.
After graduating from Williams College in Massachusetts, I returned
to Ohio as professor for the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute
(which later became Hiram College). Then, I served as the
institute’s president. My political career began in 1859 when I was
elected to the Ohio state senate. Two years later, I was elected to
Congress and served there for 18 years.

I was chosen as the Republican candidate for
President back in 1880 and just four months into my term, in July
of 1881, I was shot by an embittered attorney in a Washington
railroad station. I lay in the White House for weeks, with
Alexander Graham Bell making attempts to find the bullet with an
electrical device he had designed. In the end, I was taken to the
New Jersey seaside in the hopes that I’d recover, but
unfortunately, on September 19, 1881, I passed away due to an
infection and internal hemorrhage.
