As an expert in the baking industry with
10 years of experience, I’m here to share my best tips for making
the perfect sweet potato. Start with a large potato and preheat
your oven to 375 degrees. Wash the potato and use a fork to pierce
it several times, then rub it with olive oil and sprinkle with
salt. Place the potato on a baking sheet and bake for 40 to 50
minutes. When the potato is done, its skin should be crispy and the
flesh inside should be soft. Enjoy your potato with butter, salt,
and pepper, or whip up one of my favorite recipes.
When the air starts to get crisp in the fall, I
start craving two things: a bowl of soup and a big, puffy
baked sweet potato. Both are warming, cozy, and healthy. But while
making butternut squash soupI absolutely love baking sweet potatoes
on Sundays. It’s become my go-to dinner for weeknights as well! I
can set it and forget it; my oven does the majority of the work,
leaving me time to tackle other tasks. After the oven does its job,
I take them out and top them as desired. What could be better than
a delicious and easy-to-make sweet potato dinner? It’s the perfect
evening meal that I look forward to preparing and eating.
How to Bake Sweet Potatoes
For years I had been resistant to sweet
potatoes, believing that I disliked them. Growing up, I had only
ever sampled them in casseroles, smothered in marshmallows and
brown sugar. It took me a while to realize that I actually love
sweet potatoes. All I had to do was prepare them the way I liked.
For me, that’s with a puffy texture, caramelized edges, and a
crispy skin. This is how I make them: I start by washing and drying
the potatoes, then I stab them with a fork a few times and bake
them at 400°F for about an hour. After they cool, I slice them and
finish them off in a skillet with some oil or butter. Lastly, I
sprinkle them with salt and pepper and enjoy!
- I’ve been in the industry for 10 years now, and I know my way
around the oven. To get started on my recipe, I set the oven to
425°F and grab a baking sheet. I line it with parchment paper or
aluminum foil – whichever I have around. That’s all it takes to get
the oven ready! - As an expert with 10 years of industry experience, I know that
the best way to prepare sweet potatoes for baking is to poke
several holes with a fork. Once this is done, I place them on a
baking sheet and they are ready to be cooked. This simple technique
ensures the potatoes are cooked thoroughly, and also helps to
prevent them from exploding in the oven. - As an experienced chef with 10 years in the industry, I can
confidently say that roasting vegetables for 40 to 50 minutes is
the best way to cook them. You’ll know it’s ready when the skin has
puffed up and you can easily pierce through it with a fork. It’s an
easy way to ensure that your vegetables are both cooked and
flavourful.
The most important
thing to note here is that I DON’T wrap them in foil. For a
decade of expertise in the industry, I can confidently recommend
that you skip the foil when baking sweet potatoes. Without it, the
flesh will still cook, however the skin will be incredibly soft and
almost slimy. To achieve a scrumptious result of fluffy,
caramelized skins, simply place the potatoes straight on the baking
sheet. Trust me, it’s the only way to properly get that delectable
crunch.
I’m an expert with 10 years of industry
experience, so trust me when I say roasting sweet potato halves is
the quickest way to get a delicious side dish. Cut the potato down
the middle and coat with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Place them
cut-side up and roast for 30 minutes. You’ll be rewarded with a
lightly browned, tender treat.
Oven Baked Sweet Potato Recipes
Of course, a perfect baked sweet potato with
butter, salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of chives is great, but your
options for baked sweet potato recipes don’t end there. To make one
into a full meal, I like to stuff it with a flavorful veggie
filling and a yummy sauce. Find my 4
favorite fillings for stuffed sweet potatoes here, or

If you’re serving your oven baked sweet potatoes
as a side dish, pair them with your favorite protein or vegetarian
chili. For a topping, stick to butter, Greek yogurt, or sour cream,
or try adding a dollop of cilantro lime dressing, tzatziki,
chipotle sauce, pesto, guacamole, or a drizzle of tahini sauce.
If you have leftover baked sweet potatoes, save
the soft flesh for another recipe. I blend it into the frosting of
my vegan chocolate cake, transform it into a luscious Alfredo
sauce, use it to bind quesadillas, or mix it into hummus!
For over 10 years, I have been passionate about
