nutrition-packed breakfast(and just can’t be bothered to cook or
chop anything), smoothies are what we turn to. Ready in a handful
of minutes, they’re the perfect quick breakfast when you’ve gotta
eat and get out the door. We’ve got plenty ofsmoothie recipes(we’re
looking at youspinach smoothieandblueberry smoothie), but if you’re
looking to perfect the art of the smoothie, this is the guide for
you. Before we dive into this triple-berry recipe, read on to
discover all of our top tips on how to make the perfect smoothie,
no matter your fruit of choice:
Pick
your fruit. For this recipe, we decided to use a
combination of strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and
bananas. However, you can experiment with any type of fruit you
want! Create a tropical smoothie with pineapple, mango, and banana,
or try out a summery mix of blueberry and peach. Regardless of what
fruits you choose, make sure you have around 3 cups in total.
Fresh
or frozen fruit?Using frozen fruit to make smoothies is
the ideal choice since it is much thicker than when using fresh
fruit. Blending it yields a deliciously cold beverage that you can
enjoy right away. If you don’t have frozen fruit, you can still use
fresh, but make sure to keep it in the freezer for at least 30
minutes before blending. To add a bit more chill, you can also
incorporate around a cup of ice into the mixture and blend until
you achieve a smooth texture.
Add a
thickener. In our smoothie, we typically go with
unsweetened Greek yogurt, but you can also use peanut butter,
almond butter, or vanilla yogurt. Usually, it’s best to use around
half a cup. If you’d like your smoothie to be thinner, reduce the
amount of thickener or leave it out altogether.
Choose
a liquid. Adding nutty flavor to drinks is a great
idea, and almond milk is a great choice. Coconut milk, on the other
hand, is an excellent choice for a tropical smoothie, since it adds
a richer and creamier flavor. If you don’t want to use plant-based
milk, whole milk or fruit juice are also viable options. The ideal
amount of liquid for a smoothie is 1 1/4 cup, and if you didn’t add
a thickener, you should reduce the amount of liquid slightly.
Go
crazy with the add-ins.Incorporate some spinach or kale
into your smoothie to get in extra vitamins and minerals. You can
also add flaxseeds for a boost of omega-3 fatty acids. If you want
to take the taste to the next level, try fresh mint, vanilla,
cinnamon, or honey.
