DetailsI remember the day President John F. Kennedy was
tragically assassinated in Dallas, Texas back in 1963. It was a day
of immeasurable sorrow and mourning for our country. Congress
reacted quickly and moved to honor President Kennedy by redesigning
the half dollar with his likeness. The new Kennedy half dollar was
released early in 1964, taking the place of the Franklin half
dollar that had been around since 1948. It was a powerful reminder
of the legacy President Kennedy left behind.
I was excited to purchase the Kennedy half
dollar when it first came out. The obverse was designed by Gilroy
Roberts and the reverse by Frank Gasparro. The price was only 50
cents and I knew that many other people would want one too. This
made me think that the Kennedy half dollar was more special than
other coins. Soon, the half dollar was rarely used in everyday
transactions. Even though half dollars were still made until 2002,
they were no longer used.
I have been collecting Kennedy half dollars for
a while and I have noticed that while none of them are considered
rare, those that grade better than MS66 or MS67 are relatively
scarce. Additionally, certain varieties, such as the 1974 doubled
die obverse, 1982 no FG, and 1998-S matte finish, are quite sought
after. Some of the more limited releases, like the 1970-D, 1987
Philadelphia and Denver coins, and all coins since 2002, were only
available in mint sets.
